West vs East Nusa Penida: Which Tour Should You Choose?

If you've been planning a trip to Nusa Penida, you've probably come across this question:

Should I do the West Tour or the East Tour?

It sounds simple. But for a lot of travelers, it's genuinely confusing — especially when both sides look stunning in photos.

This guide breaks it down honestly, based on what we see from guests every day. If you haven't booked your boat yet, check our guide on how to get to Nusa Penida from Bali first.

The Quick Answer

  • West Tour → More iconic viewpoints, shorter driving time, better for first-timers
  • East Tour → Wilder landscapes, hidden beaches, better for adventurers who want fewer crowds

But the real answer depends on what kind of traveler you are. Keep reading.

West Nusa Penida: The Classic Route

What you'll see

The West Tour covers the most famous spots on the island:

  • Kelingking Beach — the T-Rex cliff viewpoint. The most photographed spot in Nusa Penida, and for good reason.
  • Broken Beach — a natural archway carved by the ocean. Stunning from every angle.
  • Angel's Billabong — a natural infinity pool on the edge of the cliff. Tide-dependent, but incredible when accessible.
  • Crystal Bay — a calm white sand beach, perfect for swimming and relaxing after a full morning of viewpoints.

The honest truth about West Tour

The West side is popular for a reason — these spots are genuinely world-class. But popular also means busier, especially at Kelingking Beach on peak season mornings.

Our tip: we always try to hit Kelingking first, around 8–9am, before the crowds build up.

The roads on the West side are also better maintained, making for a smoother ride overall.

Driving time from harbor: 30–45 minutes to first stop
Best for: First-time visitors, couples, families, Instagram lovers
Duration: 8–9 hours

East Nusa Penida: The Wilder Side

What you'll see

The East Tour takes you to a completely different part of the island:

  • Diamond Beach — white sand beach framed by dramatic limestone cliffs. Requires a steep staircase descent, but absolutely worth it.
  • Atuh Beach — a secluded bay with rock formations rising from the water. Fewer visitors, more serenity.
  • Rumah Pohon Treehouse — a cliff-edge treehouse with panoramic views of the eastern coastline. One of the most unique photo spots on the island.
  • Bukit Teletubbies — rolling green hills that feel nothing like typical Bali. Great for photos, especially in the morning light.

The honest truth about East Tour

The East side is further from the main harbor — expect 1.5 to 2 hours of driving each way through the center of the island. The roads are rougher too. Some sections are bumpy, especially after rain.

But what you get in return is a side of Nusa Penida that feels less visited, more wild, and genuinely beautiful in a different way.

Diamond Beach in particular is one of the most stunning beaches we've ever seen — and it still surprises first-time visitors who didn't know it existed.

Driving time from harbor: 1.5–2 hours to first stop
Best for: Repeat visitors, adventurers, photography enthusiasts
Duration: 8–9 hours

Can't Decide? Here's Our Honest Recommendation

Choose West if:

  • This is your first time in Nusa Penida
  • You have limited time or energy
  • You want the "classic" Nusa Penida experience
  • You're traveling with young children or older guests

Choose East if:

  • You've already done the West Tour
  • You prefer quieter, less crowded spots
  • You don't mind longer drives on bumpy roads
  • Diamond Beach is on your bucket list

Choose Both if:

  • You have 2 days on the island → our 2-Day West & East Tour is designed for exactly this
  • You want to see everything without feeling rushed

What About the Mix Tour?

We also offer a Mix Tour that combines highlights from both sides — Kelingking (West) + Diamond Beach and Rumah Pohon (East) — in a single day.

It's a great option if you have only one day but want a taste of both sides. The trade-off is more time in the car. But for the right traveler, it's totally worth it.

Planning Your Trip

Before you decide on a tour, make sure you've sorted out the basics:

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the East Tour suitable for children?
Yes, but be aware of the steep staircase at Diamond Beach (around 300 steps). Children who are comfortable with stairs and active walking will be fine. We recommend ages 7 and above for the full East Tour.

Which tour has better photo opportunities?
Both are exceptional. West wins for dramatic cliffside viewpoints (Kelingking is unmatched). East wins for variety — Diamond Beach, the Treehouse, and Teletubbies Hills all offer completely different compositions.

Can I swim on both tours?
Yes. Crystal Bay (West) is ideal for swimming — calm, clear water. Atuh Beach (East) is also swimmable, though conditions vary. Angel's Billabong (West) is only accessible at low tide.

Which tour is more tiring?
The East Tour involves more driving and slightly more walking overall. If you're prone to motion sickness on winding roads, take medication beforehand.
